For most Indian families, an overseas degree is funded at least partly by a loan. The good news is that education loans for study abroad are more accessible than ever, with options from public sector banks, private banks, NBFCs and international lenders. The challenge is choosing the right one and getting it sanctioned in time for your visa. This guide explains how to get an education loan for study abroad in 2027: the types of loans, eligibility, documents, the step-by-step process, tax benefits and the mistakes that delay approval.

What this guide covers

  • Types of education loans
  • What a loan can cover
  • Eligibility factors lenders check
  • Documents you need
  • How to get the loan, step by step
  • Tax benefits and TCS
  • Mistakes to avoid
  • FAQs

Types of education loans for study abroad

Loan typeWho offers itKey features
Secured loan (with collateral)Public and private banksHigher amounts and usually lower interest; needs property, fixed deposits or similar security
Unsecured loan (no collateral)NBFCs and some private banksFaster processing; amount depends on your university, course and co-applicant income; interest is usually higher
International lendersLenders that fund students at selected universities abroadNo Indian co-applicant or collateral in some cases; limited to specific universities and courses

Interest rates, processing fees and maximum amounts differ widely and change often. Always compare the total cost of the loan over its life, not just the headline rate.

What an education loan can cover

  • Tuition and university fees
  • Living costs and accommodation
  • Proof of funds such as a blocked account in Germany or a GIC in Canada (lender policies vary)
  • Travel costs
  • Health insurance
  • Laptop, books and equipment
  • Caution deposits and exam fees

Many lenders also offer a moratorium, meaning you pay only interest or nothing during the course and a short period afterwards. Paying simple interest during the course reduces the total you repay later.

Eligibility factors lenders check

Your admission

The university's reputation, the course and its employability matter. Many lenders keep lists of approved universities with pre-set loan limits.

Your academic record

Good marks and test scores (GRE, GMAT, IELTS) can improve the amount and terms, especially for unsecured loans.

Your co-applicant

Most Indian lenders need a parent, spouse or close relative as co-applicant. Their income, credit score (CIBIL) and existing loans affect approval.

Collateral, if any

For secured loans, the lender values the property or deposit. Clear title and complete property documents speed up the process.

Documents you need

CategoryDocuments
StudentPassport, Aadhaar, PAN, photos, marksheets from Class 10 onwards, test scores, admission letter, fee structure (I-20, CAS or offer letter)
Co-applicantPAN, Aadhaar, address proof, last 6 to 12 months' bank statements, salary slips or ITRs with computation for 2 to 3 years
Collateral (if secured)Title deed, encumbrance certificate, approved building plan, tax receipts, valuation and legal reports arranged by the lender

Keep names and addresses consistent across documents. Small mismatches are one of the most common reasons for delay.

How to get an education loan for study abroad, step by step

  • Estimate your total cost for the full course, including living costs, using the university's official figures.
  • Decide how much to borrow after savings, scholarships and family support.
  • Compare lenders on interest, processing fee, collateral need, moratorium, disbursement speed and prepayment terms.
  • Apply for a pre-admission or provisional sanction if you need a loan letter for your visa or proof of funds.
  • Submit documents and complete verification, property valuation (for secured loans) and credit checks.
  • Receive the sanction letter. Read the terms carefully before signing.
  • Use the sanction letter in your visa file where accepted as proof of funds.
  • Request disbursement directly to the university or blocked account, in line with fee deadlines.

Start at least two to three months before your visa date. Secured loans with property can take longer because of legal and valuation checks.

Tax benefits and TCS on education loans

Deduction on education loan interest (Section 80E)

Interest paid on an education loan from a bank or approved institution has long been deductible from taxable income under Section 80E, with no upper limit, for up to eight years from the year repayment starts. Only interest qualifies, not principal, and the deduction is available under the old tax regime, not the new one. The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from April 2026, so confirm the current section and conditions with your tax adviser before you file.

TCS on remittances

From 1 April 2026, TCS on education remittances is nil when funded by an education loan from a specified financial institution. For self-funded remittances, TCS is 2 percent on the amount above ₹10 lakh in a financial year. TCS can be claimed as a credit when you file your income tax return. Our guide to the cost of studying in Canada shows how this fits into a full budget.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a lender on interest rate alone without checking fees and prepayment charges.
  • Applying too late, so the sanction letter is not ready for the visa.
  • Borrowing for tuition but not for living costs, leaving a gap later.
  • Not reading the moratorium and repayment terms.
  • Ignoring the co-applicant's existing loans or credit history.

FAQs on education loans for study abroad

Can I get an education loan for study abroad without collateral?

Yes. NBFCs and some banks offer unsecured loans based on your university, course and co-applicant profile. Amounts and rates depend on the lender's assessment.

Can I get a loan before admission?

Some lenders issue pre-admission or provisional sanctions, which can help with planning and proof of funds.

Who can be a co-applicant?

Usually a parent, guardian, spouse or close relative with a regular income and a good credit record.

When does repayment start?

After the moratorium, which usually covers the course period plus a few months. Terms vary by lender.

Is the education loan interest tax deductible?

Yes, for up to eight years on interest paid to a bank or approved institution, if you file under the old tax regime. Confirm current rules with a tax adviser.
