Live Your American Dream

Take the first step towards your masters in USA

Our Partner Universities

A masters in USA is still the most popular postgraduate choice for Indian students, and for good reason: flexible programmes, strong research, paid on-campus work and up to three years of practical training for STEM graduates. It is also the most expensive and the most competitive route, so the students who do well are the ones who plan their shortlist, budget and visa together. This page explains how a masters in the USA works for Indian students in 2027, from choosing a university to getting your F-1 visa.

Quick answer: To do a masters in the USA, you need a recognised bachelor’s degree (a 4-year degree is preferred, though many universities accept 3-year degrees), IELTS 6.5 to 7.0 or TOEFL 80 to 100, a statement of purpose, two or three recommendations and proof of funds for the first year. Most programmes last 1.5 to 2 years and cost ₹40 lakh to ₹75 lakh in total at public and mid-range private universities.

Why do a masters in USA?

  • Choice: more than 4,000 degree-granting institutions, with master’s programmes in almost every field, from computer science to public health.
  • Flexible curriculum: you choose electives, specialisations and projects, and can often take courses from other departments.
  • Paid work while studying: F-1 students can work on campus up to 20 hours a week during term, and graduate assistantships can cover tuition.
  • Practical training after graduation: 12 months of OPT, plus a 24-month STEM extension for eligible degrees, gives up to three years of US work experience.
  • Industry links: internships through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and close ties between universities and employers, especially in technology, healthcare and finance.

Eligibility, GRE and English tests

Academic requirements

Most universities expect 16 years of education, which a 4-year B.Tech, B.E. or similar degree meets. Many universities now also accept 3-year Indian degrees, sometimes with a credential evaluation such as WES or a minimum grade. Competitive programmes usually look for 70 percent or a CGPA of 7.5 and above, but strong projects, research and work experience can balance lower marks.

Tests

  • English: IELTS Academic 6.5 to 7.0, TOEFL iBT 80 to 100, or Duolingo 110 to 125 where accepted.
  • GRE: optional at many universities, but a good score (310 and above) still helps at competitive programmes and for scholarships.
  • GMAT: required or preferred for most MBA programmes.

Application documents

  • Transcripts and degree certificate
  • Statement of purpose (SOP) specific to each programme
  • Two or three letters of recommendation
  • Resume or CV
  • Test score reports
  • Bank statements or loan sanction letter for the I-20

Scholarships and assistantships

A fully funded masters in the USA is rare, but most strong students can reduce the cost through a mix of these:

  • Merit scholarships: university awards of $2,000 to $20,000, often decided automatically from your application.
  • Graduate assistantships: teaching or research roles that can include a tuition waiver and a monthly stipend. They are competitive and often come after the first semester.
  • External scholarships: Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships, Inlaks Shivdasani, Tata scholarships at Cornell and others.

See our full guide to scholarships in USA for Indian students and the shortlist of fully funded scholarships in USA.

F-1 student visa, CPT and OPT

After you accept an offer and pay any deposit, the university issues your I-20. You then pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160 form, book a visa appointment and attend an interview. The officer will want to see a clear academic plan, a sensible choice of university and funds that match your I-20.

  • On-campus work: up to 20 hours a week during term, full-time in breaks.
  • CPT: internships that are part of your curriculum, approved by your university.
  • OPT: 12 months of work after graduation, plus 24 more months for STEM graduates.
  • H-1B: the main long-term work visa. A September 2025 proclamation added a $100,000 fee to certain new H-1B petitions, mainly for workers outside the US. Check current USCIS guidance before planning around it.
