Study in the United Kingdom
By admin 25/10/2026 21/10/2026
The UK Graduate route has been one of the biggest reasons Indian students choose a one-year master's in Britain: finish your course, then stay and work for two years without a job offer or sponsor. That changes from 1 January 2027. Bachelor's and master's graduates who apply on or after that date will get 18 months instead of two years. This guide explains the UK Graduate route 18 months rule, who it affects, what it costs and how Indian students starting in 2026 and 2027 should plan around it.

What is the UK Graduate route?
The Graduate route is a post-study work visa for international students who complete an eligible UK degree on a Student visa. It lets you:
- Work in almost any job, at any skill level, without a sponsor
- Change jobs freely or be self-employed
- Look for a Skilled Worker job while already working in the UK
It cannot be extended, and time on it does not count directly towards settlement. For most Indian graduates, it is a bridge to a Skilled Worker visa.
What changes from 1 January 2027
| Degree level | Applications before 1 Jan 2027 | Applications on or after 1 Jan 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree | 2 years | 18 months |
| Master's degree (taught or research) | 2 years | 18 months |
| PhD or other doctoral degree | 3 years | 3 years (unchanged) |
The change was announced in the UK government's May 2025 immigration white paper and confirmed in a statement of changes to the Immigration Rules in October 2025. The key date is when you apply for the Graduate visa, not when you started your course.
Who is affected?
Students finishing in late 2026
If your university confirms successful completion of your course before 1 January 2027, and you apply for the Graduate visa while your Student visa is still valid and before that date, you should still get two years. Ask your university when it will report your completion to the Home Office, because you cannot apply until it does.
January 2026 intake master's students
Most 12-month courses that started in January 2026 finish in early 2027. These students will usually apply after 1 January 2027 and get 18 months.
September 2026 and all 2027 intakes
Students on one-year master's courses starting in September 2026, January 2027 or September 2027 will apply after the cut-off and get 18 months. If you are choosing between intakes, see our guide to UK universities with January intake 2027 .
How much does the Graduate visa cost?
| Cost | Amount |
|---|---|
| Application fee | £937 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge | £1,035 per year (half for any part-year of 6 months or less) |
| IHS for an 18-month visa | £1,552.50 |
| Total for an 18-month Graduate visa | About £2,490 (roughly ₹2.9 lakh) |
Fees change regularly. Check the current amounts on the official GOV.UK Graduate visa page before you apply, and include this cost in your overall budget. Our guide to the masters in UK cost covers tuition, living and Student visa costs.
Graduate visa eligibility rules
- You must be in the UK on a valid Student visa when you apply.
- You must have completed an eligible bachelor's, master's or doctoral course with a licensed sponsor.
- Your university must have reported your successful completion to the Home Office.
- You must have studied in the UK for the required minimum period (for a course of 12 months or less, the whole course).
- Your dependants can join you only if they were already your dependants on your Student visa.
How to make the most of 18 months
Six months fewer means less time to find a sponsored role. The students who do well start early:
- Choose employable subjects. Data science, engineering, healthcare-linked courses, finance and supply chain tend to have stronger sponsor demand.
- Start applying during your course. Graduate schemes open in autumn, and many close before your dissertation ends.
- Use university careers services from your first month, not your last.
- Get UK work experience on your Student visa within the 20-hour weekly limit during term.
- Target sponsors. Check whether employers hold a sponsor licence before investing time in an application.
- Know the Skilled Worker rules. Salary and skill thresholds were raised in 2025, so research the requirements for your target role early.

Is the UK still worth it with an 18-month Graduate route?
For many Indian students, yes. A one-year master's still saves a full year of tuition and living costs compared with a two-year programme elsewhere, UK degrees remain well recognised by Indian employers, and 18 months is enough to start a career if you plan from day one. The change matters most for students whose main goal is long-term settlement; for them, it is worth comparing the UK with the post-study options in other countries before deciding.
Older information on post-study work, including our earlier article on post-study work visa options in the UK , describes the two-year rule. For applications from 1 January 2027, the 18-month limit applies.
FAQs on the UK Graduate route 18 months rule
When does the UK Graduate route become 18 months?
For bachelor's and master's graduates who apply on or after 1 January 2027.
Does the change affect PhD students?
No. Doctoral graduates still get three years.
I start my master's in September 2026. Will I get two years?
Most likely not. A one-year course starting in September 2026 ends in 2027, so you will apply after the cut-off and get 18 months.
Can I switch from the Graduate visa to a Skilled Worker visa?
Yes, from inside the UK, if you get a job offer from a licensed sponsor that meets the Skilled Worker requirements.
Can I extend the Graduate visa?
No. You need to switch to another visa category before it expires.
Plan your UK master's around the new rule
The 18-month Graduate route is shorter, but it is still a valuable work window for students who plan early. The right course, university and job-search strategy matter more than ever.
