IELTS Score for Masters Abroad: Country-Wise Requirements for Indian Students
“What IELTS score do I need?” is one of the first questions Indian students ask when planning a master’s abroad. The honest answer is that it depends on three things: the country, the university and the visa. A score that gets you an admit may still be too low for a scholarship or a post-study work visa later. This guide explains the IELTS score for masters abroad, country by country, with the minimums universities usually ask for, what visas require, and how to plan the right target score before you book your test.
What this guide covers
How IELTS requirements work for a master’s
There are two separate requirements to check:
- University requirement: each university, and sometimes each programme, sets its own minimum overall score and minimum in each band (listening, reading, writing and speaking).
- Visa requirement: some countries set a minimum English level for the student visa or post-study work visa, which can differ from the university’s requirement.
You must meet both. Most master’s programmes ask for IELTS Academic, not General Training. Scores are usually accepted for two years from the test date.
Country-wise IELTS score for a master’s abroad
| Country | Typical university minimum (overall) | Typical minimum per band | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA | 6.5 to 7.0 | 6.0 to 6.5 | No visa minimum, but strong English helps at the F-1 interview |
| UK | 6.5 (7.0 at many top universities) | 5.5 to 6.5 | Visa needs CEFR B2 for degree-level study, usually assessed by the university |
| Canada | 6.5 | 6.0 | Institutions set requirements; check if your programme needs more |
| Australia | 6.5 | 6.0 | Student visa minimum is IELTS 6.0 overall; 485 visa needs 6.5 |
| New Zealand | 6.5 | 6.0 | Universities set requirements |
| Germany (English-taught) | 6.5 | 6.0 | Some programmes accept an English medium of instruction certificate |
| France (English-taught) | 6.0 to 6.5 | Varies | Business schools often prefer 6.5 or above |
| Ireland | 6.5 | 6.0 | Universities set requirements |
These are typical ranges, not guarantees. Courses such as law, journalism, teaching, nursing and some business programmes often ask for 7.0 or higher, with higher writing and speaking bands. Always confirm on the programme page before you apply.
Why band scores matter as much as the overall score
Students often reach the overall score but miss one band, most often writing. If a programme asks for 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, a result of 7.0 overall with 5.5 in writing does not meet the requirement. Some universities offer pre-sessional English courses for students slightly below the requirement, but these add cost and time.
Visa and post-study work requirements
UK
For a Student visa at degree level, your English must be at CEFR B2 or above. Universities with a good compliance record can assess this themselves, so the university requirement usually decides it. If you do not have a test score, see our guide on how to study in the UK without IELTS.
Australia
The Student visa requires IELTS 6.0 overall (or 5.5 with an approved English course before your degree). The 485 post-study work visa requires IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 in each band, taken within a year of applying, as explained in our 485 graduate visa guide.
Canada
After the Student Direct Stream ended in November 2024, IRCC no longer sets a fixed IELTS score for most study permits. Your institution’s requirement applies, but officers can still consider your language ability.
USA
There is no fixed English score for the F-1 visa, but the interview is in English and officers check whether you can follow your course.
Alternatives to IELTS
Most universities also accept TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and, increasingly, Duolingo English Test, though acceptance varies, especially for visas. Our article on IELTS and TOEFL differences compares the two most common tests. Check that both your university and your visa route accept the test before you book.
How to set your target IELTS score
- List your target universities and note the highest overall and band requirement among them.
- Add any scholarship requirement, as some awards expect a higher score.
- Add any post-study work visa requirement, such as 6.5 for Australia’s 485.
- Aim for half a band above the highest requirement to give yourself a margin.
For most master’s applicants, a target of 7.0 overall with no band below 6.5 keeps the widest range of universities and scholarships open.
How to prepare for your target score
- Take a full diagnostic mock test to see where you stand.
- Focus practice on your weakest band, usually writing or speaking.
- Get writing tasks marked against the official band descriptors.
- Practise speaking with timed, recorded answers.
- Book your test early enough to retake it before application deadlines if needed.
