Study in the United Kingdom
By admin 14/10/2026 15/10/2026
The UK is popular with Indian students for one big reason: most taught master's degrees take just one year. That shorter timeline changes the maths completely. The masters in UK cost for an Indian student usually falls between ₹28 lakh and ₹45 lakh in total, which is often less than a two-year programme elsewhere. This guide breaks down tuition, living costs, visa fees and hidden expenses for the 2027 intakes, and explains what the latest UK rule changes mean for your budget.

Tuition fees for a masters in UK
UK universities set their own international fees, so the range is wide. As a guide for 2027 entry:
- Modern and mid-ranked universities: £15,000 to £22,000 for most MSc and MA courses.
- Russell Group universities: £24,000 to £38,000, with business, data science and engineering at the higher end.
- MBA programmes: £25,000 at many universities, rising to £50,000 to £100,000 at top business schools.
- Lab-based courses such as biotechnology or engineering usually cost more than humanities and management.
Most universities ask for a tuition deposit of £2,000 to £6,000 to issue your CAS. The rest is paid in one go or in instalments. To compare courses with good career outcomes, see our guide to the best courses for masters in UK , and our post on 1 year masters in UK for Indian students .
Living costs in London and outside
Your city choice can change the masters in UK cost by ₹6 to ₹10 lakh. A rough monthly budget for one student:

Visa fee, health surcharge and proof of funds
These are fixed by the UK government and apply to every student
- Student visa fee: £558 when applying from outside the UK.
- Immigration Health Surcharge: £776 per year of visa. A one-year master's usually attracts a little more because the visa runs beyond the course end date.
- Maintenance funds: £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 a month elsewhere, for up to nine months, plus any unpaid tuition. These funds must be held for 28 consecutive days.
- Tuberculosis test: mandatory for Indian applicants, around ₹2,500 to ₹3,500.
Always check current figures on the official UK Student visa page before you transfer money, because fees are revised from time to time.
UK rule changes that affect your masters cost
Graduate route shortened to 18 months
For Graduate visa applications made on or after 1 January 2027, the post-study work period for master's graduates drops from two years to 18 months. That gives less time to recover the cost of your degree through UK work experience, so it is more important than ever to start your job search during the course itself. Our guide to post-study work visa options in the UK explains the route in detail.
International student levy from 2028
The UK government has confirmed a levy of £925 per international student, charged to universities in England from August 2028. It is not paid by students directly, but some universities may adjust their international fees. Students starting in 2027 are unlikely to be affected during a one-year course.
No dependants for most master's students
Since January 2024, taught master's students cannot bring dependants. Only research degree students and some government-funded students can.
Smart ways to reduce your masters in UK cost
- Apply early for scholarships. Many universities offer £2,000 to £10,000 for Indian students, often automatically for strong academics. Chevening and Commonwealth awards cover full costs but are highly competitive.
- Consider a January intake. It can give you extra time to save, and some universities offer intake-specific discounts. See UK universities with January intake 2027 .
- Pay tuition in full early. Several universities give 2 to 5 percent off for early full payment.
- Work part-time. Master's students can work up to 20 hours a week during term and full-time in official vacations. At £11 to £13 an hour, this can cover most of your rent outside London.
- Choose university halls carefully. Private studios look attractive but can cost twice as much as a shared room.
