|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's tuition | $32,000 to $55,000 | ₹16.5 lakh to ₹28.5 lakh |
| Master's tuition | $30,000 to $50,000 | ₹15.5 lakh to ₹26 lakh |

| Insurance | $600 to $900 | ₹31,000 to ₹47,000 |
For a one-year master's or postgraduate diploma, most Indian students spend ₹25 lakh to ₹38 lakh in total. A three-year bachelor's degree typically costs ₹80 lakh to ₹1.1 crore including living costs.
Tuition fees in New Zealand
Universities
New Zealand has eight universities: University of Auckland, University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Canterbury, Massey University, University of Waikato, Lincoln University and Auckland University of Technology (AUT). Fees vary by course:
- Business, IT and arts: usually at the lower end of the range.
- Engineering and sciences: mid to upper range.
- Medicine, dentistry and veterinary science: much higher and very limited for international students.
Master's options
New Zealand offers both one-year (120-credit) and 1.5 to 2-year (180 to 240-credit) master's degrees. The one-year option keeps the study in New Zealand cost low, while longer research-based degrees can lead to stronger job and post-study outcomes in some fields.
Polytechnics and institutes of technology
Institutes of technology and polytechnics offer applied graduate diplomas and bachelor's degrees at lower fees. Check that your chosen qualification meets post-study work visa conditions before enrolling.

Living costs in New Zealand
The visa requires proof of NZD 20,000 a year, but your actual spending depends on the city.
| Item | Auckland (per week) | Other cities (per week) |
|---|---|---|
| Rent (shared flat) | NZD 250 to 350 | NZD 180 to 260 |
| Groceries | NZD 80 to 110 | NZD 70 to 100 |
| Transport | NZD 30 to 50 | NZD 20 to 40 |
| Phone, internet, utilities | NZD 30 to 45 | NZD 25 to 40 |
Auckland is the most expensive city, mainly because of rent. Hamilton, Palmerston North, Christchurch and Dunedin are noticeably cheaper, and Dunedin has a large, affordable student housing market around the University of Otago.
Visa fees and proof of funds
- Fee Paying Student Visa: from NZD 850 when applying online from India. The visa can be granted for up to four years, depending on your course.
- Proof of living funds: at least NZD 20,000 for each year of study (NZD 1,667 a month for shorter courses), in addition to tuition.
- Proof of tuition payment: usually the first year's fees, paid to the institution.
- Medical and chest X-ray certificates from approved panel physicians.
- Travel and medical insurance for the full stay.
Funds can come from savings, a sponsor or an education loan. Check the latest requirements on Immigration New Zealand before you apply, or get help with the full file through our student visa support .
Part-time work and post-study work
Working while you study
Since 3 November 2025, eligible students can work up to 25 hours a week during term, up from 20, and full-time during scheduled holidays. With New Zealand's minimum wage above NZD 23 an hour, a student working 20 to 25 hours a week can cover much of their rent and food, which makes a big difference to the real study in New Zealand cost.
Post-Study Work Visa
Graduates of eligible qualifications can apply for an open Post-Study Work Visa for up to three years, depending on their qualification level. It can only be granted once, and you must apply before your student visa expires. A shorter graduate work visa of up to six months is being introduced for some Level 5 to 7 graduates. This makes New Zealand a practical option for students who want international work experience after their degree.
Ways to reduce the study in New Zealand cost
- Choose a one-year master's or graduate diploma if it fits your career goals and post-study work plans.
- Study outside Auckland. Rent savings alone can be ₹3 to ₹5 lakh a year.
- Apply for university scholarships. Many universities offer NZD 5,000 to NZD 15,000 international excellence awards. The government also offers Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships for some programmes.
- Work part-time from the first term. Use the full 25 hours where your study load allows.
- Plan your loan early. Compare education loan options and moratorium periods. See our education loan support .
