The Erasmus Mundus scholarship is one of the few awards that can fund an entire master's degree in Europe: no tuition, a monthly allowance and the chance to study in two or more countries. It is competitive and fully open to Indian students, and most applications for programmes starting in 2027 open between October 2026 and January 2027. This guide explains how the Erasmus Mundus scholarship for Indian students works, what it pays, who is eligible and how to build an application that stands out.

What is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's?

An Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's (EMJM) is a single master's programme run by a group (consortium) of universities, usually in different European countries. You typically spend each semester or year at a different partner university and graduate with a joint or multiple degree.

  • Length: 12, 18 or 24 months (60, 90 or 120 ECTS).
  • Language: almost all programmes are taught in English.
  • Mobility: study in at least two countries is built into every programme.
  • Fields: engineering, data science, renewable energy, public health, economics, marine biology, cultural studies and many more.

The European Commission funds the scholarships, but each consortium runs its own admissions and selects its own scholars. You apply directly to the programme, not to a central Erasmus office.

What the Erasmus Mundus scholarship covers

ComponentValue
Tuition and mandatory participation costsFully covered (scholarship holders are not charged)
Monthly allowanceEUR 1,400 for the full programme duration
Total allowance, 12-month programmeUp to EUR 16,800
Total allowance, 24-month programmeUp to EUR 33,600
Application feeNone for EMJM programmes

The allowance is meant to cover travel, visa, settling-in and living costs. For a two-year programme, the total value including waived tuition can easily exceed ₹50 lakh. Some consortia also offer partial scholarships or fee waivers to strong candidates who miss the main scholarship.

Eligibility for Indian students

  • Degree: a bachelor's degree, or be in the final year and graduate before the programme starts.
  • Nationality: there is no nationality restriction, so Indian students compete on the same terms as others.
  • Previous scholarship: you must not have held an EMJM scholarship before.
  • Programme rules: each consortium sets its own subject background, minimum grades and English requirements (usually IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90 or above).

One rule matters for Indian applicants: a consortium cannot give more than 10 percent of its scholarships to students of one nationality. With many strong Indian applicants, this makes it wise to apply to more than one programme.

How to choose the right programmes

It is sensible to apply to two or three programmes in the same year. Check the current Erasmus+ guidance for any limit on the number of applications, then choose carefully:

  • Match your bachelor's subject closely. Consortia want students who can handle the course from day one.
  • Read past intake profiles. Many programme websites publish where their students come from and their backgrounds.
  • Check the mobility track. Know which countries and cities you will live in, and the living costs there.
  • Look at outcomes. Internships, thesis partners and alumni jobs show how career-focused a programme is.

The official Erasmus Mundus catalogue lists every current programme with links to its website and deadline.

Documents you need

  • Bachelor's degree certificate and transcripts (or provisional results if in final year)
  • Passport
  • CV in Europass or a clear academic format
  • Motivation letter written for each programme
  • Two or three recommendation letters, usually from professors
  • English test score (IELTS, TOEFL or as specified)
  • Proof of residence, if the programme asks for it
  • Portfolio, research proposal or GRE only if the programme requires it

Most consortia accept scanned copies at application stage and ask for certified documents only after selection.

Tips to improve your chances

Write a motivation letter for each programme

Selection committees can spot a generic letter instantly. Mention specific modules, the mobility track and how the programme fits your career plan.

Show academic strength and direction

A good CGPA helps, but projects, publications, internships and relevant work experience show that you will use the degree well.

Choose referees who know you

A detailed letter from a professor who supervised your project is stronger than a short letter from a senior name.

Have a backup plan

Apply to tuition-free or low-cost options alongside Erasmus Mundus. Our guides on free education in Europe and the cheapest countries for a master's in Europe list strong alternatives.

Can final-year students apply?

Yes, if you will complete your bachelor's degree before the programme starts.

Is work experience required?

Not for most programmes, but relevant experience can strengthen your application.
